Wild Burro Trail & Tortolita Mountain Trail System
The Tortolita Mountain Trail System runs along the ridgelines and through the canyons of the Tortolita Mountains, with a total of 10 trails with a combined length of 29 miles. Along the trails, hikers, bikers, and equestrians can enjoy panoramic vistas in all directions, lush Sonoran desert vegetation, a variety of birds and other wildlife, petroglyphs, and ruins of an abandoned homestead. The Tortolita Mountains also contain a rare density of crested saguaro cacti and in the spring, wildflowers add a splash of color to your hike!
The trails provide something for people of all skill levels, whether you're looking to go for a nice, easy stroll, immerse yourself in a challenging hike or bike ride, or go on a horseback ride.
The Wild Burro Trailhead is the gateway to most of the Tortolita Mountain Trail System. The trailhead is located just down the road from The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain, and features ample parking, a shaded picnic ramada, and flush toilets. The Tortolita Preserve is also located close by, which offers flat trails surrounded by desert vegetation, for great views without the hills or rocks.
Reminder: When hiking, make sure to Leave No Trace and to practice basic hiking safety by knowing your limits, checking the weather beforehand, telling someone where you're going and when you'll be back, bringing enough snacks and water, and wearing sturdy, closed-toe footwear.
